On the surface, Calima Shatiday’s use of the word Guerilla to describe the musical compilation appears to be an oxymoron, at first. However, if one judges Guerilla against the backdrop of similar music, then a guerilla chill style definitely shows. A funky chill fills Distant Sincerity, and the title track Guerilla blends funk with a sprinkle of Middle Eastern vibe, underneath a blast of horns. However, Calima Shatiday slows down the tempo on Rag Pie, which makes one think about laying in the grass on a summer’s day, watching fast moving clouds in the sky. Guerilla contains four quality tracks and leaves a listener wanting more.
One expects a set of tracks with the title Detroit to reflect the current state of a struggling city through rough or downtrodden musical expressions of a former industrial and commercial powerhouse. Calima Shatiday expresses the opposite. Naming a track for the city’s historical landmark Belle Island, Calima Shatiday captures the sadness and beauty of a city trying to make a comeback. For example, Extended Stay expresses an upbeat tempo that still maintains the coolness one imagines Detroiters still possess. The mellowness of Laughing in Southfield, a neighboring city of Detroit, captures the essence of a thriving suburban landscape. On Nothing But Land, Calima Shatiday tells the story of a city scrambling for a new identity that fuses island rhythms with the soul of Motown.

Calima Shatiday’s title track Ceretta’s House is perfect for a road trip. A listener will wonder where Ceretta’s House exists. The track makes one imagine driving through the mountains of Montana or the Arizona desert, bouncing one’s head up and down with the track set to repeat. All the tracks in this compilation show individual flavor. Dubuque is seductive with a relaxing tempo while In the Mist is mesmerizing and Love feels like a warm, needed hug. Musical treats are captured throughout on Ceretta’s House.
